This is NOT an up north rotted road salt car. YES, the car has rust, but it’s not rotten…ALL old cars have rust! Again, The car is not rotten. The exterior is a little rough around the edges, the seller states, “Most people will ask, does the car have rust…. After ’68, the SS396 identity is lost due to it becoming an option and not remaining as a separate model. Owing to this Camino’s VIN, it can be determined that this example is what it purports to be. Of note, this El Camino is an SS396 model which was first offered on the El Camino in ’68 even though the 396 engine was available in ’66 and ’67. The El Camino story has been covered here on Barn Finds numerous times in the past, so it’s best to just delve into this example. It is located in Walker, Louisiana and is available here on eBay for a current bid of $5,001, reserve not yet met. Being an SS396 version, in particular, caught my interest with this 1968 Chevrolet El Camino so let’s examine it. As is often the case, you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. I have always like this kit-bash between a car and a 1/2 ton pickup. I have been looking at the ’68 to ’72 version lately and with more than just a passing interest. Additional underside images are provided in the gallery.I have an El Camino jones going on. ![]() Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. An image of the stamping is provided in the gallery. The seller notes that the last six digits of the engine stamping match the final six digits of the VIN shown on the chassis tag. The carburetor was rebuilt in 2017 and a leaking rear main seal was repaired at that time. The 396ci L78 “Turbo Jet” V8 was factory rated at 325 horsepower. The five-digit odometer shows 6k miles, approximately 3k of which have been added by the seller. The seller notes there is corrosion on the turn signal and gear selector stalks. The three-spoke steering wheel features a blue rim and fronts a 120-mph speedometer and optional 7k-rpm tachometer along with gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, amperage, and fuel level. The seller notes the air conditioning, radio, and interior dome light do not work, the passenger kick panel is deteriorating, and the brake pedal squeaks when applied. Equipment includes a tilt steering column, wood-trim dash insert , lap belts, vent windows, factory air conditioning, and an AM radio. The cabin is trimmed in blue vinyl upholstery with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. The car is equipped with power brakes and power steering, and the seller states the tires were installed in 2017. Rally-style 15″ wheels feature polished trim rings and Chevrolet hub caps and wear BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The seller notes areas of corrosion on the rear bumper and the driver side rocker panel, both of which can be referenced in the gallery along with other exterior imperfections. Additional features include a wood-trim rear panel, an SS-style hood,driver-side mirror, and a rubber bed protector. The car is finished in Nantucket Blue and chrome adorns the side moldings, front and rear bumpers, grille, and window surrounds. This El Camino is offered with partial service records, black California license plates, and a clean California title in the seller’s name. The seller acquired the car in 2017, and work completed that year consisted of servicing the carburetor, repairing a rear main seal leak, and replacing the gas tank and tires. Equipment includes 15″ rally wheels, power steering, power brakes, an SS-style hood, wood-trim rear panel, chrome bumpers, and an AM radio. This 1967 Chevrolet El Camino is finished in Nantucket Blue over a blue interior and is powered by a 396ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission.
